mood: at loss
hooked on to: A day without rain by Enya
Today was a reasonably productive day, did a fair bit of reading of the past lecture notes. Went to central library whereby i was practically stuck at the RBR section and the photocopying room attempting to dilligently print my SS readings. Collected my unexpectantly dog-eared second-hand marketing textbk from lydia too, at 25 bucks.
gotta start getting down to some very very serious readings.
Just got my first SS assignment. Seems quite interesting despite me still unsure of how to approach the topic. In layman's term, basically everyone is given different distinguishing historical features of s'pore and we're supposed to do an analysis of the said landmark/statues/whatsoever.
The personality of place ("genius loci" in Latin) depends on both the morphology (building, space, architecture, artifacts), sociology (usage, function, community), and memory of people who are attached to it. There are many places in Singapore which have special meaning and identity. Due to rapid social and physical changes many of them simply vanished, but some of them persisted.
This assignment is to help you to understand architecture as an interrelationship of physical articulation and social inhabitation processes, transformed over time. Read the article, visit the place, try to find the building, talk to people, do a small research (browse internet, look for maps, find old pictures, take new photos, make sketches, etc.), and write your report.
and the landmark assigned to me is...
The Door Gods of Orchard Road, the 2 Tang dynasty ceramic statues at Hilton Hotel.
These two chinese persona were known as the guardians of the doorways, springing from the alleged soothing protection they provided emperor Tang at night after he spent many sleepless hours in his bed as evil spirit supposedly haunted his nights.
In reminiscence of secondary school & JC days, i dont think i've ever gotten a homework this interesting. Doesn't seem that easy too, but i want to do well this semester. badly.
mug, mug, mug.
*mutter-mutter*
Havent seen rudy for 2 days already. Feels rather strange, but i ought to get used to it. :(
